The National Policy Dialogue on a Just Transition and Adaptation in the Food System aims to build a coordinated understanding and shared policy approach across diverse sectors. While just transition debates in South Africa often focus on energy, the food system also contributes significantly to emissions and is highly vulnerable to climate change. A just transition in the food system must therefore address environmental, social, and economic justice by tackling corporate dominance, ensuring food sovereignty, and protecting the most vulnerable. Ultimately, it envisions a system where resources are fairly redistributed, democratic decision-making is strengthened, and everyone’s basic right to food is realised.
